K2: Lhotse
Will you choose the unconquered wall or the calm pass?
Lhotse. From Tibetan: southern peak. The fourth highest mountain in the world, located south of Mount Everest, is part of the same massif. It is named after Charles Howard-Bury, the captain of the first British expedition to these unexplored areas of the world.
The south face of Lhotse is over 3000 meters of very steep and dangerous ascent. Many outstanding climbers have been defeated by it. Some paid with their lives for attempting it, like the famous Polish climber Jerzy Kukuczka. Even such an illustrious Himalayan climber as Reinhold Messner, who has summited all the eight-thousanders in the world, retreated from high-altitude climbing forever after attempting to summit Lhotse via the south face. To this day, only one team of climbers has likely successfully summited Lhotse attacking from the south. Sergey Biershkov and Vladimir Karataev in 1990 overcame one of the hardest challenges of modern mountaineering.
K2: Lhotse is an expansion for the base game K2, in which players' task is to efficiently manage a team of two climbers to ascend as close to the summit as possible. The expansion includes an alternative double-sided board and new weather tiles. The expansion also introduces a completely new mechanic - rope tokens, which allow players to establish their own routes.
With the K2: Lhotse expansion, two different scenarios can be played using the double-sided board.
The first scenario is a demanding and strategic race against time and weather. The board depicting the south face is divided not just by height, but also into three vertical sectors, dividing it into eastern, central, and western parts. A new set of weather tiles will indicate different weather conditions depending on the sector. Additionally, new rope tokens have been added, allowing players to lay out new paths between already known routes. The ropes will enable quicker escape from dire weather or deadly avalanches.
The second scenario is a fast race to the summit of Lhotse, from the safer southern pass, which is also the easiest route to Everest. Players will have fewer cards at their disposal, as they will need to discard 3 of them at the very beginning. But be careful - the better the cards they discard, the more bonus points they will receive at the end of the game! Additionally, in this scenario, the passage of time becomes even more critical: the climb will only last 15 days, so players will need to hurry on their way to the summit.
Attention! This is not a standalone game! The base version of the game is required: K2 (new edition).
