Istanbul: Big Box is the complete edition of Istanbul and its two expansions: Mocha & Bakshish and Letters & Seals. Istanbul by Rodriger Dorn is a strategy game for 2 5 people that belongs to the canon of the best board games. The game has won a number of prestigious nominations and awards, including the Kennerspiel des Jahres award by winning in 2014 against Concordia. Istanbul: Big Box is for everyone. The basic version has simple enough rules to teach them to a child or a person with less experience in board games. By adding the Mocha & Bakshish or Letters & Seals expansions, or playing in the Grand Bazaar variant, we can significantly hinder the game, making the game a challenge also for advanced players. Istanbul scales great, works great for both 2 and 5 players.
Modular board with 16 Location tiles
In Istanbul, each player leads the Merchant and his four Helpers, who move between the 16 Locations of the bazaar. In each Location you can perform a different action, m.in.: in the Fabric, Spice and Fruit Warehouses we get Goods, which we can then sell at a profit at the Small or Large Market or exchange them in the Sultan's Palace for Rubies, for money we can buy Rubies at the Jeweler, and at the Police Station we can free our relative and send him to another Location to take care of the business for us, in the Small or Large Mosque we gain special abilities, in the Teahouse and on the Black Market we can gamble to get cash or valuable silver. In individual Locations, players will encounter additional characters roaming around the board: the Mayor, who deals Bonus cards, and the Smuggler, who allows you to exchange Goods. The game will be won by the first to get 5 Rubies (6 in a 2-player game).
The challenge that the player faces is that in order for the player to perform an action in the Location, his Merchant needs the support of a Helper, whom he must leave behind. To use this Helper again later, the player's Merchant must return to the Location in the following turns and take it with him. Players should therefore plan their actions carefully so that they are not left without Helpers and thus without the possibility of performing any action.
Mocha & Bakshish Additive
The Mocha & Bakshish expansion introduces 4 new Locations, a new Coffee Commodity that can be exchanged for Rubies in the Café, Guild cards that bring very strong one-time bonuses, the Location Lock mechanic, as well as a new Coffee Merchant character where you can buy more of this Good. In addition, two new special abilities are introduced, including the ability to travel any distance in a straight line. When playing with the Mocha & Bakshish expansion, the existing playing field expands from 4 x 4 tiles to 4 x 5 tiles, which increases the difficulty of the game, you need to plan your moves on the board even better.
Letters & Seals Appendix
The Letters & Seals DLC brings 4 new Locations, including an Auction House with bidding mechanics, an additional Partner who performs actions independently and alternatively to the Merchant, a new Letter delivery mechanism and a new Courier character from whom we can receive a Letter for delivery. When playing with the Letters & Seals add-on, the playing area expands from a 4 x 4 tile matrix to 4 x 5 tiles.
Grand Bazaar game variant
If you already know both expansions for Istanbul well, we recommend trying the Grand Bazaar variant. In this variant, you combine elements of the base game with both the expansions Mocha & Bakshish and Letters & Seals. We then get a huge 5 x 5 tile playing area, which requires a lot of planning moves and building a winning strategy. It's a real treat for lovers of heavier games.
